Organized by the MSP Film Society and hosted at <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mspfilm.org\/showtimes\/\">The Main Cinema<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other local venues, the MSPIFF will showcase over 200 films from around the world. In addition to the usual panels, parties, and eclectic lineup of features and shorts, filmmaker Ang Lee will be in attendance for a conversation, as well as screenings of his films <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2000) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brokeback Mountain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2004).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mspfilm.org\/mspiff44\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>MSPIFF<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> celebrates its 44th year in 2025 as one of the largest and longest-running film festivals in the United States. \u201cWe are firm and passionate believers in the power of the arts, and especially of film, to transport us, refresh our perspectives, enrich our understanding and connect,\u201d wrote Susan Smoluchowski, the festival\u2019s Executive Director. \u201cIf ever there were a time when we needed a chance to unite through shared interests, curiosities, aspirations and pursuits, this would be it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having attended MSPIFF for over 15 years, I always look forward to their lineup. Without fail, I see some of my favorite films of the year at the festival. This year, I will write about a cross-section of international, local, and independent cinema. For starters, I plan on catching up with several titles that played at last year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival, including Miguel Gomes\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grand Tour<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, winner of the Best Director prize.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As usual, independent studios and mini-majors feature heavily in the schedule.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">A24 will premiere a couple of titles at the festival for their Minnesota debuts, including the much-anticipated cringe comedy <em>Friendship<\/em>, starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, and the cute animal adventure\u00a0<em>The Legend of Ochi<\/em>.<\/span>\u00a0Janus and Sideshow bring Alain Guiraudie\u2019s thriller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misericordia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the festival. And Bleecker Street offers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Friend<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a grief drama featuring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, and also the 2025 remake of Ang Lee\u2019s 1993 comedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wedding Banquet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other films I\u2019ll see include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bushido<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quisling: The Final Days<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never Alone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savages<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019m most excited to see the latest from Jia Zhangke, the renowned Sixth Generation Chinese filmmaker. Jia has been the subject of a recent \u201cFilmmaker in Focus\u201d series on Deep Focus Review\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/join\/deepfocusreview?\"><strong>Patreon<\/strong><\/a>, with an exclusive essay in The Definitives about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepfocusreview.com\/definitives\/xiao-wu\/\"><strong><i>Xiao Wu<\/i><\/strong><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1997) and reviews of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepfocusreview.com\/reviews\/the-world\/\"><strong><i>The World<\/i><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2004), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepfocusreview.com\/reviews\/a-touch-of-sin\/\"><strong><i>A Touch of Sin<\/i><\/strong><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2013), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepfocusreview.com\/reviews\/mountains-may-depart\/\"><strong><i>Mountains May Depart<\/i><\/strong><\/a><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2015), and more. Set for release later this month by Janus and Sideshow, Jia\u2019s new film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caught by the Tides<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, features his wife and muse, Zhao Tao.
